Growing Instructions

What You'll Need:

  • A sharp, clean knife or scissors

  • A spray bottle with clean water

  • A well-ventilated space (60–75°F, indirect light)

Step 1: Prepare the Block

  • Leave the block in the bag, unless it's a shiitake block, then remove it from the bag and set on a tray and ignore the next 2 bullet lines.

  • The bag will have a series of “X” or an “—” marks on it. Wipe the spots you're going to cut with isopropyl, peroxide, or vodka and let it dry for a minute.

  • Using a knife or scissors cut one or multiple of the indicated sharpie lines. The more holes you cut the more small clusters you will get. If you want fewer bigger mushrooms, cut only one hole in the bag.

Step 2: Create Humidity

  • Place the block in a spot with indirect light—do not place it in direct sunlight.

  • Mist the cut area 2–3 times daily. Keep the surface moist but not soaking. Once mushrooms begin to grow keep misting them and the cut in the block.

Step 3: Watch Them Grow!

  • Tiny pins (baby mushrooms) should appear within 5–10 days. This step will take longer if you are outside the temperature range.

  • Mushrooms grow rapidly—harvest just before the edges turn upwards.

Step 4: Harvesting

  • Gently twist and pull, or cut at the base with a clean knife.

  • Avoid damaging the block, it can stagnate additional flushes.

  • Store fresh mushrooms in a paper bag in the fridge. Use within 5–7 days.

Step 5: Second Flush (Optional)

  • After harvest, let the block rest 3–5 days.

  • Resume misting to encourage new growth. Expect 1–2 more flushes, though yields will decrease.

  • If the block feels exceptionally light or very dry you can soak in clean water for an hour to rehydrate before remisting as stated above.
