Mushroom tacos and a salad on a table at MaxZen in Clarks Summit PA

Mushroom Tacos at MaxZen in Clarks Summit, PA.

Our love of food and scratch cooking is what lured us into this wild food-centric farmsteading lifestyle. When we eat out, we typically try to choose establishments that inspire us as cooks, as gardeners, and as farmers. Here are a few of our favorite restaurants in Northeastern PA…

Maximum Zen Bakery

Located in Clarks Summit, PA, MaxZen’s menu changes almost daily and is often designed around what’s in-season and locally available in Northeastern PA. It’s owned and operated by New Zealander chef Donna Fitzgerald Vannan, Donna makes some of the best mushroom tacos we’ve ever had, and her raspberry-coconut lamingtons are out of this world. Donna’s menus have an emphasis on vegetarian and plant based foods, gluten free foods, and allergy-friendly options. Our favorite lunch spot in NEPA, hands down. You’ll find our microgreens, and occasionally our mushrooms and seasonal veggies, on the menu. You can follow Donna on Facebook or Instagram to see her custom daily menus and dessert pics.

State Street Grille

Located in Clarks Summit, PA State Street is our favorite non-diner brunch spot in NEPA and their seasonal menus never fail to spark our culinary interests. They’ve forever changed how we make homemade potpies, their mushroom specials are always exceptional, and we can’t help but love their date night ambiance. You’ll find our microgreens on the menu year-round and our edible flowers when they’re in season.

Draught & Barrel

Located in downtown Tunkhannock, PA, Draught & Barrel brews their own craft beer, makes stunning craft cocktails and serves up an elevated menu of light fare that features local ingredients. We’re huge fans of their sliders and love to pop in for a great beer and a few appetizers. You’ll find our microgreens on the menu year-round and our edible flowers when they’re in season.

The 16th Ward

From their pizza to their pasta or their truly outstanding Okonomiyaki- The 16th Ward is one of our favorite local date night spots in Scranton, PA.

Turkey Hill Brewing

From wild game burgers to duck wings and mushroom specials- Turkey Hill Brewing’s menu never disappoints. We appreciate the laid back atmosphere, craft beer, and creatively elevated pub fair. Located in Bloomsburg, PA

Pine Hill Tavern

This one isn’t in Northeastern PA, but its MaryJayne’s all-time favorite restaurant and is absolutely worth the drive- or worth stopping for en route to Philly. Located in Pineville, PA this historic tavern dates back to 1765 and George Washington is rumored to have used the tavern for respite and strategy planning during the revolutionary war. Today, the tavern serves up elevated pub faire made from quality ingredients in a setting that makes us feel as though we’ve stepped out of place and time. They make an exceptional bolognese, their fresh baked bread is noteworthy, and their wine list is commendable. Everything we’ve eaten here has been truly outstanding.
